Tree Preservation During Construction: Planning, Protection & Liability

Presented by William Scott
ISA Board Certified Master Arborist Urban Forest Professional

Construction activities are among the most damaging stressors to urban trees, often leading to long-term decline or removal. This course provides arborists with practical strategies for tree preservation before, during, and after construction. Topics include site assessment, root and soil protection, barrier installation, monitoring during construction, and post-construction remediation. Liability considerations and communication with contractors, clients, and municipalities will be emphasized to ensure both tree survival and risk reduction.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify tree preservation priorities during construction projects.
  • Apply protective measures for roots, soil, and canopies in construction zones.
  • Monitor and document tree health during active construction.
  • Communicate liability, risk, and preservation requirements to stakeholders.

Wood Decay & Tree Biomechanics: Diagnosing Hidden Risks

Presented by William Scott,
ISA Board Certified Master Arborist Urban Forest Professional

Wood decay and biomechanical instability are major contributors to tree failure but can be difficult to detect and evaluate. This course reviews the biology of wood decay fungi, methods for identifying external and internal signs, and the application of biomechanics to predict failure potential. Case studies and diagnostic tools (resistographs, sonic tomography, and visual inspection) will be discussed to provide arborists with practical approaches for evaluating hidden risks.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explain the biology of wood decay organisms and their effects on trees.
  • Identify visual and diagnostic indicators of internal decay.
  • Apply biomechanical principles to evaluate tree stability and failure risk.
  • Use diagnostic tools to support decay assessment and management decisions.

Emerging & Epidemic Tree Health Threats: Identification, Treatment & Prevention

Presented by William Scott,
ISA Board Certified Master Arborist Urban Forest Professional

Arborists face a growing array of new, expanding, and potential epidemic tree health threats. This course provides an advanced look at emerging insects, pathogens, and invasive species that may shape the future of tree care. Participants will learn to recognize early signs of invasive pests, expanding fungal and bacterial diseases, and shifts in pest pressure. Emphasis will be placed on diagnostic tools, laboratory testing, and monitoring technologies, as well as treatment and prevention strategies including integrated pest management (IPM), cultural practices, biological controls, and chemical options.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify new, expanding, and potential epidemic tree pests and pathogens.
  • Apply diagnostic and monitoring tools for early detection of emerging threats.
  • Recommend prevention and treatment strategies using IPM, cultural, biological, and chemical options.
  • Develop proactive management plans to reduce risk and improve preparedness for large-scale outbreaks.

Building Resilient Urban Forests: Preparing Trees for Heat, Drought & Severe Weather

Presented by William Scott,
ISA Board Certified Master Arborist Urban Forest Professional

Urban trees face mounting stress from hotter summers, extended dry periods, and increasingly intense storm events. This course equips arborists with practical, science-based strategies to improve resilience before these challenges peak. Participants will learn how to strengthen tree defenses through spring interventions such as soil and water management, canopy care, and proactive planting decisions. Broader resilience tools—including species diversification, improved planting systems, and site design innovations—will also be addressed. The course highlights how both municipal forestry programs and private tree care companies play critical roles in preparing urban forests for environmental stress, focusing on applied arboriculture and measurable outcomes without political framing.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe environmental stressors such as heat, drought, and severe storms and their impacts on urban trees.
  • Apply practical spring interventions to improve tree resilience, including soil/water management and canopy care.
  • Recommend strategies for species diversification, planting systems, and site design that support long-term resilience.
  • Evaluate how municipal forestry programs and private tree care companies can contribute to resilience at different scales.
