Tree Health Diagnostics, Dendrology & Decline Assessment
Presented by William Scott
ISA Board Certified Master Arborist Urban Forest Professional
Fall is a critical time to assess tree health, as foliage color changes, late-season diseases, and root stresses reveal issues that may go unnoticed during the growing season. This course equips arborists with advanced tools for diagnosing decline, integrating fall foliage analysis, disease symptom recognition, root health evaluation, and tree-ring analysis.
Participants will also strengthen their dendrology skills, using identification traits such as bark, buds, branching, and leaves to improve diagnostic accuracy. The course highlights how short-term symptoms and long-term decline indicators can be combined into stronger, science-based assessments.
Learning Outcomes
- Interpret fall foliage coloration and tree identification traits as indicators of stress and decline.
- Identify late-season fungal and abiotic disorders affecting tree health.
- Apply tree-ring analysis to detect past stress events such as drought, construction injury, or disease progression.
- Integrate multiple diagnostic tools into comprehensive assessments of tree decline.

Comprehensive Fall & Dormant Season Tree Care: Plant Health, Pruning & Stress Reduction
Presented by William Scott,
ISA Board Certified Master Arborist Urban Forest Professional
The fall and dormant season present arborists with key opportunities to maintain, restore, and prepare trees for longevity, safety, and resilience. This comprehensive course combines holistic plant health care (PHC) practices with advanced pruning and structural maintenance to create a full-spectrum approach to seasonal tree care. Participants will explore soil and water management, nutrition, transplanting, and the use of anti-transpirants alongside dormant-season pruning, cabling, bracing, and other structural support practices.
Strategies for stress reduction—including canopy load management, wound care, and proactive preparation for snow and ice—will also be addressed. Emphasis will be placed on ANSI A300 standards and integrated maintenance strategies that balance client goals, safety, and long-term tree health.
Learning Outcomes
- Explain the biological and structural benefits of fall and dormant-season tree maintenance.
- Apply holistic PHC practices, including soil remediation, irrigation adjustment, fertilization, and anti-transpirant use.
- Integrate pruning techniques, including structural pruning and retrenchment, with canopy load reduction to improve safety, longevity, and health.
- Evaluate the use of cabling, bracing, wound care, and other stress-reduction measures as part of a comprehensive fall and winter maintenance program.

Winter Preparedness: Stress Management, Storm Risk & Utility Coordination
Presented by William Scott,
ISA Board Certified Master Arborist Urban Forest Professional
Winter storms bring unique risks to urban and community trees, from ice and snow loads to high winds and saturated soils. This course provides arborists with advanced strategies for protecting trees from environmental stress while also addressing risk management and utility coordination.
Topics include freeze–thaw injury, salt exposure, desiccation, snow and ice loads, storm-related failures, predictive risk assessment methods, and utility vegetation management (UVM) practices such as line clearance and right-of-way inspections. Emphasis will be placed on integrating tree biology, arboricultural practices, and risk/liability considerations into one comprehensive winter preparedness framework.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify environmental stress factors such as freeze–thaw injury, salt exposure, and desiccation.
- Apply predictive risk assessment methods to evaluate storm-related tree failures.
- Integrate utility vegetation management practices into storm preparation and response planning.
- Develop holistic strategies for winter preparedness that combine stress management and risk reduction.

Pests & Pathogens in Dormancy: Overwintering Strategies & Spring Threats
Presented by William Scott,
ISA Board Certified Master Arborist Urban Forest Professional
Many of the most damaging insects and diseases survive the winter in hidden forms—eggs, larvae, spores, or infected tissue—before emerging as major threats in spring. This course provides arborists with strategies to identify, monitor, and disrupt overwintering pests and pathogens.
Participants will examine insect life cycles, fungal and bacterial survival strategies, and site conditions that influence dormancy. Integrated pest management (IPM) practices for fall and winter will be emphasized, including sanitation, pruning, and monitoring techniques that reduce pressure before the next growing season.
Learning Outcomes
- Identify common insects and pathogens that overwinter in bark, roots, or soil.
- Explain insect and pathogen life cycles that influence dormancy and spring emergence.
- Apply late-season and winter IPM strategies, including sanitation, monitoring, and cultural controls.
- Develop management recommendations that reduce pest and disease pressure in the following growing season.
