Utility Arboriculture: What You Should Know

Every day, in communities all across the world, people rely on safe, reliable electric service to power their homes, businesses, and public buildings—while also protecting and enhancing the urban forest. This presentation will cover utility arboriculture programs and explain why they are essential for recognizing best practices in public and private utility arboriculture. We will demonstrate how trees and utilities can co-exist for the benefit of communities and citizens, balancing the demands of expanding utility needs with the benefits of adequate care for our urban forests.
We will also discuss the Five Core Standards of Utility Arboriculture:
- Quality Tree Care — Current industry standards for pruning, planting, removals, trenching, and tunneling near trees.
- Annual Worker Training — The requirement for utility employees and contract workers to be trained at least annually in best practices.
- Tree Planting and Public Education — Available programs for tree planting and public education, demonstrating proper tree planting, placement, and pruning, while expanding the tree canopy in the community.
- Tree-Based Energy Conservation Program — How to develop and implement a formal tree-based energy conservation program, with special consideration of the value of trees in conserving energy.
- Arbor Day Celebrations — The importance of sponsoring or participating in annual Arbor Day events at the community level, including collaboration with community groups whenever possible.

Plant Health Care: Tree Support, Construction, and Lightning Defense

Arborists are often called to care for trees in a variety of situations and at all stages of their life. The effects of storms, lightning, construction, and age can be catastrophic not only to trees but also to the surrounding environment, properties, people, and communities. These factors can lead to the potential loss of valuable assets in our urban and community forests.
This presentation will discuss the importance and methods of supporting new trees as well as techniques for providing support and increasing safety while reducing liability for mature trees that may need assistance as they age. We will also cover the reasons for and methods of installing lightning protection systems, the impact of lightning strikes on tree health, and reasonable expectations for trees affected by lightning.
Finally, we will examine the effects of construction on trees and what can be done to provide care both before and after construction. Both short- and long-term care for trees impacted by different types of construction will be addressed.
